What is a Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD)?

A Psychiatric Service Dog (PSD) is a specially trained service animal that assists individuals with mental health disabilities. PSD handlers are granted specific legal rights under federal law allowing them to bring their dogs into public spaces such as restaurants, hotels, and housing. Unlike emotional support animals (ESAs), PSDs are permitted fully inside the cabin with their owners free of charge.

While often confused with emotional support animals (ESAs), PSDs and ESAs differ significantly in their roles and legal protections. The key distinction lies in training:

  • Psychiatric Service Dogs are trained to perform tasks that directly assist their owner in managing their life-prohibiting harm.
  • Emotional support animals provide comfort through companionship but do not require task-specific training.
